The Perfect Match for Bone Marrow Awareness

Australian Marrow Match (AMM) is a foundation determined to raise awareness for bone marrow/blood stem cell donation. Their mission is to increase the number of donors on the Australian Bone Marrow Registry, particularly the number of young males.

This Saturday, the clash between Lauderdale and North Hobart at Skybus Oval will be the first ever Australian Marrow Match Awareness game. This is greatly attributed to the joint work of both the Marrow Match foundation and AMM ambassador Mark Reid. Last year, Reid’s life was saved by a stem cell donation.

This week, Reid will speak to both teams, giving insight into his own story and the urgent need for more young men to become bone marrow/blood stem cell donors. The male population make up just 5% of donors, indicating the importance of this message. “The talk tells my story and goes on with the reasons on why to donate stem cells.”

Reid’s need for a donation came during the high point of the Covid-19 pandemic in 2020.  The need to find a donor is hard enough in any circumstance, but to tackle that during a time of hard lockdowns and restrictions is especially challenging.

Football appears to be the perfect platform to promote this cause as it showcases the exact age group the foundation is trying to connect to, 18-35-year-old men. “That demographic fits perfectly, and once I realised that the perfect donors are 18-35 year olds, I just married it up with footy straight away.”

Reid is delighted about the connection between AMM and Tasmanian Football. He hopes the occasion can become an annual event. “I’m extremely pleased and it’s been very well supported by both Footy clubs and AFL Tas.”

AMM Co-founder Gill Hunt will be in attendance on Saturday at the inaugural AMM Awareness game. “We are really excited and happy to see it being launched,”

Hunt hopes that both teams can enter Skybus Oval spurred on by Reid’s words. “Mark has got such an amazing story to tell.”

Both Lauderdale and North Hobart will be desperate for win on Saturday, the Demons especially, as they are yet to register a win in 2021. North Hobart’s Joshua Hilder is fired up for the occasion. “(It’s) very special to play in a game like this, it doesn’t come along very often.”

Lauderdale’s Bryce Walsh echoes these sentiments, “Anytime you can play in a charity game to promote awareness, it’s always an honour to be a part of.”

The six best drivers from our two-league nights battled it out for the chance to take home both the winner’s trophy and a year’s worth of free racing at Hyperdrive.   This seasons Grand Finale was an evolution of the first. The added factor of a pitstop both during qualifying and the race was sure to spice things up. During the 20-lap qualifying session all drivers had to set a time in both Sodi and Shifter Karts. Their best lap ties from each Karts were then added together to determine the starting grid for the 60-lap endurance race.
