Van Gisbergen's challengers emerge in Tasmania

Shane Van Gisbergen has now joined the ranks of legends including Mark Skaife and Allan Moffat with six consecutive race victories.
His streak was not long for this earth, his fellow drivers quickly managing to break it. Teammates Jamie Whincup and Chaz Mostert took home victories in race seven and eight respectively.
We take you through the highlights of the weekend’s action in Tasmania.
Race 1
It was an early statement from SVG as he qualified on pole by over three tenths, an impressive margin considering all the practice running was looking incredibly tight.
Cam Waters and Jamie Whincup were able to get the jump on Van Gisbergen off the line. The championship leader was able to claim second off his teammate (Whincup) on lap two and retook the lead nine laps later.
It was a Red-Bull one-two punch as Whincup finished second, while Anton De Pasquale grabbed Dick Johnson Racing’s second podium of 2021, finsihing in third.
Van Gisbergen was happy so far with Red Bull’s performance in Tasmania.
“Braking was the biggest strength,” he said
“One-two for the team and everyone’s pretty stoked.”
De Pasquale was happy with his first podium of the year, but very aware of Red Bull’s strength.
“We’re getting better and better every round,” he said.
“(Red Bull) are very dominant at the moment, so we’ve got a lot of work to do.”
Race 2
Waters took pole for race two and led for half of the race until another Red Bull overtake on turn six, this time by Whincup.
Whincup was able to take the race victory and interrupt Van Gisbergen’s winning streak in the progress.
Will Davison took his second podium of 2021, Whincup taking a friendly jab at his teammate post-race.
“Good feeling to get the win of course, the bloke beside me has had a shocker, he finished second,” he laughed.
Whincup is embracing the feeling of winning in what is set to be his final year in Supercars.
“I’m not sure how many wins I can establish this year, but I guarantee you, I treat every one like it’s the last,” he said.

Race 3
Race three ended up being the first race without a Red Bull on the podium.
Chaz Mostert was able break his win draught and take his maiden victory for Walkishaw-Andretti Racing.
“When I came to the team, there was a little dry spell for the team to get results,” he said.
“It’s so rewarding to give back to our guys and our sponsors.”
Dick Johnson Racing made a strong statement with De Pasquale finishing second and Davison third.
“I feel like we’re well and truly finding our feet now, which helps our confidence heading to tracks where the team have been successful in the past,” De Pasquale said.
After qualifying on pole for both race seven and eight, Cam Waters lamented his struggles with tyre wear in Tasmania.
“We’re good over one lap; just trying to get the tyres to hang on it (in the races),” he said.
