Formula 1 officially unveil the car for 2022
On the eve of the 2021 British Grand Prix the 2022 Formula 1 car has been officially revealed to the public. While each team will develop its own interpretation of the vehicle, it will be the basis for the future of the sport.
The need for a drastic change in machinery has come from widespread criticism of the recent racing spectacle. The best eye candy for F1 fans is seeing 300kph cars battling bumper-to-bumper.
Over the past decade, F1 cars have struggled to stick close behind each other and close the gap enough to pass. The minds behind the 2022 regulations insist the new car will provide better racing with a ‘revolution in aerodynamics’.
Downforce is the key factor in providing F1 cars with the grip required to race at incredible speeds. Currently, when behind each other F1 cars they can lose 50% of their downforce due to dirty air from the lead driver. The innovators of the new machine predict cars in 2022 will only lose around 20% of their downforce in the same situation.
Formula 1 turbo-hybrid engines are already one of the most efficient in the world, even more so than most road cars. The new car comes with upgraded engine components.
Sensors will enable the teams to monitor the efficiency and output of the engine. A new sustainable fuel called E-10 will be implemented which will be one of the first steps towards making Formula 1 fully carbon neutral.

‘When the opportunity comes to be at Williams you put everything else aside’
The 2021 grid got their first up-close look at the new car on Thursday morning at Silverstone and voiced their opinions to the media.
Australian Daniel Ricciardo appreciates the style and insists that, much like the Halo, it will soon become the norm.
“I like the rear of it, the rear looks pretty old school,” he said.
“The front is very different, but I think like all things the more you stare at it, the more normal it will start to look”
7-time world champion Lewis Hamilton has dominated the turbo-hybrid era winning all bar 1 championship since 2014.
How does he feel about the possibility of some closer competition? “2022 will be a serious challenge, getting used to a new era of car,” he answered.
“If it enables us to follow and race like its planned to, I think it will be amazing for the sport”.
Current championship leader Max Verstappen hopes that the car lives up to its claims of improved racing.
“Interesting, it’s very different to what we are used to,” he said.
“The most important thing is that we improve the racing, that we can race closer”
“If this is the way forward them I’m all for that”
